Back Pain - The Bane of Problem Solvers Everywhere.

If only there was a way to finally be rid of it once-and-for-all...

Oh Wait!

THERE IS!

In order to solve your back pain - you know, the aches and pains you've been struggling with for months that affect your productivity at work, at home, and at play? - there's some pre-game stuff we gotta address first, folks.

First up:

Why the hell does my back hurt in the first place?!

Top notch question, my friend, and I sense your frustration. Let me break it down for you.

Lower Back Pain

Some say the root of all evil - I'm inclined to agree. This article will focus solely on Low Back Pain as it's a problem I get asked about with much frequency!

Much like any area of the body, the lower back pain is often caused by other areas of the body being too weak, too tight, or both.

Here's a short list of areas of the body that cause low back pain when too tight:

  • Hamstrings - My friend put it this way when referencing how tight his hammy's were, "They're made of granite" 😆

I mean... just look at this guys low back rounding to compensate for tight hamstrings..

  • Hip Flexors - These are some surprisingly complicated muscle/connective tissue areas of the body that can have DIRECT affect on the lower back when too tight

  • Quadratus Lumborum and Obliques - Basically your "side" lower back and abs. Most folks suffer from imbalance between sides from a lifetime of favouring one side over the other. It can pull your whole system out of wack!

  • Inner Thighs - If these puppies are too tight, your back has to round to compensate in a lot of cases. This is a recipe for imbalance.

This is an actual look at my own inner thighs… 😉 I swear…

  • Glutes - I could get into exactly what areas of the glutes are most responsible for low back pain when tight, but for now I'll leave it as just... tight glutes.

Lower back rounding can often occur from tight glutes restricting mobility

Here's a short list of areas of the body that cause low back pain when too weak:

  • Lower Back - This one’s kind of a “duh”, but a weak lower back leads to straining and injuries!

If you think I was able to do this exercise right off the hop, even as an athlete… you’re very wrong!

  • Glutes - Weak glutes can cause the lower back to compensate when taking loads and impact

  • Hamstrings - Understandably, weak hamstrings lead to over compensation of the lower back when under load

  • Quadratus Lumborum and Obliques - With weak side support, the lower back takes the brunt when under load.

Stretching while strengthening is what it’s all about, folks.

You may have noted the overlap between weak and tight areas of the body affecting the low back. This is common sense once we realize the role each area of the body plays in our day to day.

Now, as much as I would love to go into exact methods for lengthening and strengthening each trouble area mentioned above... This article is not the place for such a conversation.
